چکیده

Disjunctive Logic Programming (DLP) is an advanced formalism for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR). DLP is very expressive in a precise mathematical sense: it allows to express every property of finite structures that is decidable in the complexity class Σ 2 (NP ). Importantly, the DLP encodings are often simple and natural. In this paper, we single out some limitations of DLP for KRR, which cannot naturally express problems where the size of the disjunction is not known “a priori” (like N-Coloring), but it is part of the input. To overcome these limitations, we further enhance the knowledge modelling abilities of DLP, by extending this language by Parametric Connectives (OR and AND). These connectives allow us to represent compactly the disjunction/conjunction of a set of atoms having a given property. We formally define the semantics of the new language, named DLP W , V and we show the usefulness of the new constructs on relevant knowledgebased problems. We analyze the computational complexity of DLP W , V , showing that the addition of parametric connectives does not bring a higher cost in that respect.

On Goal-Directed Provability in Classical Logic

One of the key features of logic programming is the notion of goal-directed prov-ability. In intuitionistic logic, the notion of uniform proof has been used as a proof-theoretic characterization of this property. Whilst the connections between intuition-istic logic and computation are well known, there is no reason per se why a similar notion cannot be given in classical logic. In this paper we...

On proving functional incompleteness in symbolic logic classes

/ Introduction: Functional completeness A set of truth-functional connectives is said to be functionally complete if every truth function can be represented by some formula which uses connectives only from that set. In the first semester of a sequence of introductory symbolic logic courses, one normally remarks that the usual connectives {-, v, -•, Λ, <->} form a functionally complete set. Typi...

Truth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics

The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...

A Distributed Kripke Semantics

A. An intuitionistic, hybrid modal logic suitable for reasoning about distribution of resources was introduced in [10]. We extend the Kripke semantics of intuitionistic logic, enriching each possible Kripke state with a set of places, and show that this semantics is both sound and complete for the logic. In the semantics, resources of a distributed system are interpreted as atoms, and pl...

A Semantic Tableau Version of First-Order Quasi-Classical Logic

Quasi-classical logic (QC logic) allows the derivation of non-trivial classical inferences from inconsistent information. A paraconsis-tent, or non-trivializable, logic is, by necessity, a compromise, or weakening , of classical logic. The compromises on QC logic seem to be more appropriate than other paraconsistent logics for applications in computing. In particular, the connectives behave in ...
